I'm old enough to remember when you bought software in a shrink wrap box or CD sleeve with a license key inside. Then you installed it on your computer and it was yours to use until the license ran out or you cracked it :). Many times, that software was written by a small business trying to fill a niche and make a reasonable profit. Contrast that with today's software buying experience which usually requires purchasing monthly access to a SaaS application for every user in your organization. In addition, you often have to give the vendor full permission to use your data in any way they see fit, including training their AI models.
I want to go back to a time when you could just purchase and use software on reasonable terms, on your own system, without having to give your data to a business whose focus is maximum value extraction.
